  • I’ve long had the desire to keep things simple. It’s not an easy task in today’s society. There is so much information flowing toward us it’s difficult to ward it off and remain focused on the basic needs which matter most.
.
We get caught up in consumption of things and wanting more stuff, more food, better experiences (convincing ourselves we need these things). Most of us leverage ourselves financially to get them, placing ourselves in considerable debt and becoming owned by the very things we desired to own. I’m certainly guilty of this. We live beyond our means and fill our lives with things that we wouldn’t miss if they were gone. Why do we pursue them then? Why do we hunt and gather for the sake of hunting and gathering? Why do we seek to acquire a particular thing, then once we have it put it aside to find the next thing to pursue or acquire?
.
I believe the answer to the question of why is rather simple, we are made this way. Evolved (or perhaps not) from the hunter gatherers of our ancestry. Yet we have little to hunt and gather for in the historical sense, it’s been reduced to shopping, buying, acquiring. It’s how we get the fix that’s been engrained in us. Hunting and gathering is now the continual pursuit of a better partner, a bigger house, a better car, more bikes, walking up and down aisles in the grocery store picking boxes and cans off a shelf. Somewhere along the line of progress we’ve lost track of improving our lives by making basic needs more readily available to everyone and instead have fallen into creating lives of excess built on debt and future income… all to keep our economy growing.
.
I continue on our website to discuss deliberate living and simplifying. Click link in @dirtygoodco bio to read further.

Just a hump day reminder of all the good stuff! Lately there’s been discouragement, doubt, panic and many unwanted concessions but we’re hanging in! Keeping faith that a path continues to appear, thanking the Universe for providing what we need and affirming daily to each other that we are not, in fact, pathetic 😏 I am a million miles from anywhere I’ve ever been before because I’m living by deliberate choice, however uncomfortable it might be at times. We’re building confidence in our priorities and our individuality. We’re constructing healthy relationships with each other, with ourselves and within the communities we visit. I feel more balanced than ever and on a road to wholeness that I didn’t know was on the map.

“When you have lived your individual life in your own adventurous way and then look back upon its course, you will find that you have lived a model human life, after all.” Joseph Campbell

  • Brave Provisions this week... When you are open to the exploration of your thoughts, allowing them to formulate without getting hung up on directing them, good things happen. ⠀
.⠀
I've learned several things from my experiences dealing with depression a few years back. The direction I allowed my life to take afterward, which includes this migratory path of embracing a mobile, essential, and more deliberate way of life, has shown me that when you allow yourself to simply listen to thoughts and ideas that float through your mind, without judgment and without trying to direct them, you will uncover a truer self and discover what is meant for you.⠀
.⠀
This self discovery may come very slowly; it has for me. I'm continually drawn back toward the worn path. The well trekked path I've walked for more than 40 years is a path difficult to step off, though I no longer desire to walk it. A life of introversion, fear, comparison, and insecurity isn't easy to abandon despite knowing it is not necessary. The path I wish to travel requires equal parts openness and resolution: openness to whatever the path reveals while being steadfast to continue through the uncertainty. ⠀
.⠀
Remaining open allows me to see through the clutter of life and discern what is meant for me. When I stray I am reminded of the path I must travel. A discomfort comes over me, a slight nipping at my guts knowing, like a cattle dog at my heels. I am also presented with guidance. This week that affirming guidance was an article about storytelling.⠀
.⠀
This article struck a chord as I wage an internal battle each time I write a post, or this newsletter. I fear my writing is narcissistic, and that this exercise is my own version of the personally despised selfie. It's a word selfie.⠀
